Renewal of Bulgaria’s Tentative List of Natural Properties for Inscription on the World Heritage List and Development of a New Nomination for Rila Mountain (June 2009 – April 2010)

Goals of the project:
Revision and renewal of the Bulgarian tentative list of natural properties;
Preparing a nomination for including Rila Mountain in the tentative list;
Rising the public awareness and support for the natural properties on the Bulgarian tentative list;
Raising the awareness and improving the understanding about the Convention and the outstanding universal value concept in Bulgaria.
Capacity building and development of mechanisms and procedures for work on the tentative list and implementation of the Convention in Country

Project results:
The tentative list is a list of natural and cultural properties located within the boundaries of a State Party of the Convention, which have outstanding universal value and are appropriate for inclusion on the World Heritage List.

Bulgaria has 2 natural properties on the World Heritage List of UNESCO – Pirin National Park and Srebarna Nature Reserve. The cultural monuments of Bulgaria on the World Heritage List are nine, two of them in the category “intangible cultural heritage”. Six natural properties are on the Bulgarian tentative list.

The Project provided review, update and systematization of the information about the natural properties on the Bulgarian tentative list. Nominations of new properties with potential to be included in the World Heritage List were developed. Web site presenting the Bulgarian properties on the UNESCO World Heritage List and on the tentative list was created. The capacity of the institutions responsible for work on the tentative list and implementation of the Convention in country was raised.
